How much responsibility do we have for the future?
Welcome address of the president of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz
Education and science are the sources of innovation and the foundation that makes our society future-complient. Universities play a pivotal role in the process of further development and transfer of knowledge. Leading research on the one hand, the qualification of intelligent minds on the other - these core tasks turn universities into the motor of a science-based society.
Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU), like many other universities, is facing huge challenges in the 21st century: increasing competition for a top position in research and teaching, the responsibility to provide a growing number of young people with a high-quality academic education and the task of making our knowledge available to other parts of society are some of the most important ones. This is a major goal for our country and reaching it will require private initiative. What is needed are new ways, a new style of thinking and new practical approaches to keep our scientific system efficient and functional.
The private commitment of our sponsors and donors is essential to maintain research and teaching at our university on the cutting edge of knowledge. It provides an important foundation for securing future opportunities for our society.
It gives me great pleasure to hear that you are considering taking responsibility and helping to shape the future. JGU and its researchers, students, staff members, friends and sponsors are keen to strengthen their position at the pinnacle of German university life.
We are on the right path - join us!
University Professor Dr. Georg Krausch
